The Community of Watergate is a scenic, water accessible community in Annapolis, Maryland, on Thomas Point Road between the South River and Fishing Creek. The community was established in the 1960's and has sixty-one individually built homes, of which thirty-three are waterfront. For those homes that do not have direct water access, there is a newly rebuilt community pier with 25 slips. The pier is part of a large community recreational area that has basketball and volley ball courts, swings and a small beach with picnic tables. Our community recreational area fronts on Fishing Creek with a direct view of the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. Watergate is a family friendly community, which hosts several social events each year, including our Summer Picnic and Happy Hour Socials at the recreational area's beach, and our Annual Holiday parties hosted at different member's homes. Watergate’s location and nearby amenities truly offer its residents a wonderful lifestyle. Thomas Point State Park is within walking distance of the community, and Historic Downtown Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy are just a quick 10 minute drive. Quiet Waters Park, a 340-acre waterfront park on South River, is also only a few minutes away.

The Return of Diamond Jim—Beginning in June, DNR Fisheries biologists and teams of young anglers take to the Chesapeake Bay to catch, tag and release hundreds of striped bass. Every tag has a unique number designating the striper as a Diamond Jim. Each month until September, one fish will be predetermined to be the official Diamond Jim worth as much as $25,000 to the angler who catches him. The other tagged “imposter” fish are worth $500 each. This year, as many as 600 fish will be tagged and released representing more than $300,000 in potential cash winnings.
For the full breakdown on potential Diamond Jim cash prize amounts check out the official rules.
The 2010 contest ends at midnight on Labor Day September 6 and the 2011 Maryland Fishing challenge begins at 12:01 a.m. September 7, 2010.
With more than 350,000 licensed anglers participating in pursuit of more than 60 sport fish species from the cool mountains and the fertile lakes and streams of Western Maryland leading to the mighty Chesapeake and the Atlantic Ocean, this is surely the largest fishing tournament in America.
To “Catch a fish” is one of the Maryland Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights, issued by Governor Martin O’Malley in April 2009 as part of the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature, an initiative to ensure all Maryland young people have the opportunity to connect with their natural world and grow to become informed and responsible stewards.
